Xu Ying femin/inner feeling
Exhibition from 16. May to 5. July
Born in Shanghai, educated in Beijing, landed in Schaffhausen: three years ago, the Chinese
painter Xu Ying (b. 1975) left her own world to come to live and work in the world of her husband.
The confrontation with a foreign culture as well as the contrast between Schaffhausen and
the Chinese metropolises has shaken her to the roots: as a woman, a mother – and as an artist.
This existential experience has given Xu’s work a whole new foundation. In this new world,
Xu’s origins suddenly take on a new meaning, proud womanhood is now omnipresent, gestures
and poses embody poverty. But at the same time, a sensation of something fathomless haunts
the works as well: instead of persons there are figure-like shapes or hulls, in empty space,
without a foothold, and here and there the glowing red seams of silk blouses conjure up the
association of scars.
Following her two works shown at the juried “Ernte 13” exhibition, all of the pieces produced
by Xu in Switzerland will now be on display. Alongside their high aesthetic quality, their outstanding
characteristic – depth – is beyond all doubt. Home
