Exhibition from 15. May to 5. July 2014 on the lower floor:

MATERIAL WORD

CARL ANDRE: «SEVEN BOOKS OF POETRY», 1969

«[…] certainly my interest in elements
or particles in sculpture is paralleled by my Vitrine
interest in words as particles of language.»

«I have attempted to write poetry in which
the sentence is not the dominant form but the
word is the dominant form

Carl Andre, 1975

The years between 1960 and 1964 were formative for the forthcoming work of the Minimal Artist Carl Andre – he refers to this time as «my advanced degree in sculpture.» During this period, he produced the largest part of his so-called poems, which, in 1969, Seth Siegelaub organized into seven folders and published as 36 sets with the title «Seven Books of Poetry».

We are lucky to be able to present and to offer one such complete set – even if it is one of the sets
that are neither signed nor numbered (see the description by David Platzker, in the meantime curator
in the department of prints and illustrated books at the Museum of Modern Art in New York).
